About
The Historical Writers Forum was formed in 2018 as a Facebook group for members from all around the world to help support and encourage writers of all types of history, whether fiction or non-fiction. Since then, we’ve branched out to Twitter and YouTube. We have presented at the History Quill online historical fiction convention and continue to seek the best ways to serve our writing community.
The mission of HWF is to provide a place where writers and readers of history, historical fiction, and historical fantasy can connect, improving our skills and helping others improve theirs, all in the name of helping others learn about the story behind the history.

Lynn Bryant
Lynn Bryant was born and raised in London’s East End. She studied History at University and had dreams of being a writer from a young age. Since this was clearly not something a working class girl made good could aspire to, she had a variety of careers and has worked as a librarian, an NHS administrator, a relationship counsellor, the manager of an art gallery and also ran an Irish dance school before she realised that most of these were just as unlikely as being a writer and took the step of publishing her first book.
She now lives in the Isle of Man and is married to a man who understands technology, which saves her a job, and has two grown-up children and two Labradors. History is still a passion, with a particular enthusiasm for the Napoleonic era and the sixteenth century. When not writing, she walks her dog, reads anything that’s put in front of her and makes periodic and unsuccessful attempts to keep a tidy house.
Lynn’s books are primarily set during the long years of the Napoleonic Wars. The Peninsular War Saga follows the fortunes of a battalion of light infantry and its unconventional commanding officer, Paul van Daan. The Manxman series is set in the navy during the same period, and her down to earth Manx navy officer Captain Hugh Kelly is joined by the socially awkward, brilliant First Lieutenant Durrell. Lynn has also written two Regency romances and a number of short stories. All the books and short stories are linked, with characters moving freely between them.
Lynn is known for her meticulous research, her larger than life characters and her portrayal of the women involved in the war. A recent reviewer said:
“Your female characters are what make the series so compelling because they are not ancillary trophies for the men at war but instead, true-to-life partners dealing with the same peril.”
Lynn’s books have twice been shortlisted for the Society for Army Historical Research fiction prize. She blogs regularly and spends far too much time on Twitter talking about history and Labradors.

Paula Lofting
It has been Paula’s ambition to one day be a writer since she was a little girl, coming home from school to sit at the table with her notebook and write stories that buzzed around in her head. A prolific reader, she loved nothing better than to spend weekends with a book in her hand. Earliest influences such as Rosemary Sutcliffe, Leon Garfield, Charles Dickens, C.S.Lewis, inspired an interest in history. Unfortunately life got in the way, and it was not until much later in life that she would achieve her lifelong aspiration and write the book she had promised herself she would one day write.
Her début novel, ‘Sons of the Wolf’ was first published with the assistance of SilverWood Books in 2012. More recently it was republished under her own publishing company, Longship Books. It is a story set in the years leading up to the Norman Conquest of England and the first in the Sons of the Wolf series, about this amazing time in English history. Her second novel, The Wolf Banner, has also been published in paperback and kindle and the third, is a WIP, Wolf’s Bane and will be published later this year in 2021.
She has always admired the works of Sharon Penman and Bernard Cornwell, Edith Pargetter and Mary Stewart, amongst many others. History is a great love of hers and her interest in the subject goes beyond that of the keyboard. She also enjoys Anglo-Saxon re-enactment with Regia Anglorum, a great source of research for her writing. Paula says: “Ignore those who say you should write what is trending. Write for yourself first and foremost, for if you don’t enjoy what you write, then you cannot expect others to.”
